Your home's wiring is built to carry a steady voltage. When something pushes far above that for a fraction of a second, that spike travels down the wire looking for the nearest thing to damage.

The power strips people plug in behind a TV only protect what is plugged into that one strip. A device at the panel covers the whole service, including the things you cannot put a power strip on, like your furnace, your dishwasher, and your garage door opener.

Where do surges come from?
