How does a standby generator actually work?

There are three main parts: the generator unit, the automatic transfer switch, and the fuel supply.

The transfer switch is the brain. It watches the incoming utility power. When it sees an outage, it signals the generator to start, waits a few seconds for the engine to come up to speed, then switches your house over from the utility to the generator. When utility power returns and stays steady, it switches you back and tells the generator to cool down and shut off.

That automatic switch is also what keeps power from your generator from ever feeding back onto the utility line. That backfeed is dangerous for the crews working to restore power, and the transfer switch is the piece that prevents it. This is why a standby unit is a permanent, wired-in system, not something you roll out and plug in.
